It's been way too long since we offered a restaurant review, and certainly there are a number of very good reasons why, not the least of which is spelled COVID. Still, even in the time of pandemic, there are splendid places that are unexpectedly gifted to us. The South Bay Wild Fish House & Market is just such a place!
We were there last Sunday after wandering thru the highly enjoyable Sunday Astoria Market where vendors offered some exceptional wares, including enormous bouquets of colorful fresh flowers, hand crafted baskets being created onsite, and wildlife paintings by Dave Bartholet along with a set of easily accessible, exceptionally clean and well serviced restrooms. With the market located on 12th Street from Commercial to Exchange, it's easy to navigate your way among the booths of engaged sellers.
It's a bit of a hike up to South Bay Wild Fish House & Market, but we found it to be well worth the investment in time. The greeting by staff was a very happy welcome, with several people helping us to find the perfect seating for our somewhat disabled friend. When we couldn't make up our mind what to order - too many enticing choices - we were offered a sample of one of their top fish sellers. In spite of the volume of business in the cafe, service was thoughtful and prompt, and we soon found our table adorned with generous and delicious servings of fish and salad.
We had gone to Astoria on a whim, packed up the car and driven several hours up North just to get out of town and to beat the urban heat. The next time we head to Astoria you can be sure it will be specifically to dine at the South Bay Wild Fish House & Market.
