Thai Yummy - most certainly it is "yummy," just like the owner's daughter proclaimed!
This isn't your usual food cart. It's located at 1010 Gibbs Street, just up the hill from OHSU's Emergency/Hospital facility on Sam Jackson. In other words, you wouldn't normally drive by it and say to your mate: Let's try that some time.
Well, actually, that's kind of what happened to me: I walked by it and said to myself: Steven and I should try Thai Yummy tonight!
When I was recently visiting my friend in the OHSU hospital and needed a bit of physical activity to distract me from the facility's routine, I set off on a meandering route that took me by Doernbecher Children's Hospital and up to Gibbs Street, along the way passing a Plaid Pantry and 2 Thai restaurants, one of which was a brick and mortar with lovely cloths draped over the tables and the other of which was an unobtrusive food cart nestled between residences and an office building with "No Parking" signs littering their lot.
I was immediately struck by and intrigued by the number of customers lining up at the food cart on a damp and drizzly afternoon. Nonetheless, I kept walking up and up, then I couldn't help myself, I circled the block and was back at Thai Yummy. I had to take a second look at this restaurant. Observing that still more customers had arrived and taken the 3 steps up to the counter at Thai Yummy, I decided to return early in the evening to place an order.
When I returned, Jason, the owner, greeted me warmly and entertained with a variety of stories while I waited for the food to be prepared and served piping hot in a microwave safe and reusable container. The quantity was astonishing! It was a very heavy take-out box that I held in my hand! The price was quite affordable at $7 and for those who are super hunger, Jason adds more meat for an additional $1-2. Most important, however, the taste was exceptionally delicious. The heat was perhaps a little too much for me so when I went back on Friday night, Jason suggested 1+ heat and that was perfect for my taste. In fact, the whole experience at this hidden gem was perfectly yummy!
Oh, in case you're enticed to visit Thai Yummy, be sure to consider their L4 Pad Krua Gai, L19 Yellow Curry and L15 Cashew Nut, and don't forget the A34 Spring Rolls (4) for $3.75.
