Think of the perfect mushroom appetizer, and you're probably thinking of the Forest Mushroom Rhapsody proudly served at the Garden View Restaurant at the Oregon Garden Resort. It's plump with sun-dried tomatoes and seasonings folded into a medley of oyster, shitake and cremini mushrooms and encased in filo dough...truly a remarkable visual and taste treat!
For an entree, I selected the half duck, and it arrived with a delicious and seasonally appropriate cranberry sauce and red potatoes. Steven's prime rib was a generous portion cooked to perfection and accompanied with red potatoes and very forgetable vegetables. Dessert? No way. After 2 helpings of the delicious crusty rolls, Steven and I found ourselves carrying take-out boxes filled with generous portions of our entrees back to our room to be savored at a later time.
Silverton's freezing fog couldn't stop this fungal fruiting in the Oregon Garden.
We had the pleasure of a two night stay at the Oregon Garden Resort a couple of weeks ago and dinner was part of the package. It was a great stay and we'd like to offer kudos to Moonstone Properties for their emphasis on comfort and quality. Our spacious king room was part of a 6-room building and featured an incredibly comfortable bed and cheery fireplace as well as a private, landscaped patio. We found the front office staff to be gracious and helpful, but it was the housekeeping and maintenance staff that really earned our thanks. Our room at the Resort was probably the cleanest and best-maintained guest accommodation that we've encountered in many years.
As you might imagine, even in the raw, 34 degree chill of the morning, we had to take a stroll around the Oregon Garden, which features more than 20 specialty gardens and features, including waterfalls, quiet ponds, fountains, a 400 year old Signature Oak, a Northwest Garden, a Pet Garden, and a Children's Garden (complete with an in-ground Hobbit house and a tree fort). Yet, it was the Conifer Garden and it's congenial caretaker, Doug, that really captured our attention. In spite of the cold, Doug devoted a lot of time to walking us around the confer plantings, pointing out this plant and that, including the much talked-about Chief Joseph Lodgepole Pine. This rare conifer has the remarkable characteristic of displaying light-green needles in compact bundles throughout the warmer times of the year. However, when the weather begins to cool, the chlorophyll recedes into the limbs, and the needles morph into a glowing golden and yellow display that lasts until spring arrives; then the needles return to their light-green color. Hmm, I'm thinking that spring might just be a perfect time to revisit the Oregon Gardens and the Garden View Restaurant!
