It was the third night of the early May conference at the Coeur d'Alene Resort in Idaho that we chose Bonsai Bistro for late night dining.
I had spent the day in workshops and seminars while Steven had been out scouting for morels and helvellas. At the end of the day, we were both ready to relax and be refreshed in the quiet surrounds of this lovely eatery that's within easy walking distance of the Resort. We chose to dine upstairs, where a traditional rock garden is the focal point of the room. The Bistro also boasts a waterfall and stream surrounding their enclosed outside dining area, along with a downstairs dining room which features tables on a central island surrounded by a koi pond.
For dinner we ordered a variety of items which included a variety of sushi, Mandarin Duck Spring Rolls, Crispy Honey Cashew Prawns along with Almond Cashew Chicken with mushrooms and other assorted vegetables. All the items were attractively presented on small plates.
The setting was lovely, the ambiance was splendid, but, I have to admit, some of the preparations were just a little disappointing. The dishes seemed to lack the certain something that the menu description promised, and, quite frankly, the Almond Cashew Chicken was overcooked for our tastes. Perhaps it was the hour (we arrived around 8:30), perhaps the staff was more interested in the Cinco de Mayo celebrations that we heard were being planned for later in the evening, but Bonsai Bistro's cuisine didn't quite fulfill our expectations.
