We've been waiting all year for this: fall mushrooming on Mt. Hood and Port Orford! Although the collecting has not been spectacular in either location, we haven't been disappointed. Our baskets have been filled with golden and white chanterelles, matsutakes and boletes - what a pretty sight!
We dedicated ourselves to mushrooming on Mt. Hood in mid-October after I finished the week long Catalytic Leadership training provide by the Luke Center at Kahneeta. The weather on Mt. Hood was perfect for a walk in the woods. We checked our favorite spots for chanterelles, matsutakes, cauliflower and coral hydum and gathered a respectable collection. However, based on the size and quantity of mushrooms, it quickly became clear that the season was just starting to manifest itself.
You won't find these mushrooms in our collecting baskets!
Back in Port Orford, we've been spending time mushrooming on warm Sunday afternoons. First, there was a foray with good friends and talented photographers, Steve and Eve, and the ever cheerful Kathy O. Once again, we concluded: it's just early, the beginning of the season. The chanterelles were young and small, yet exceptionally meaty and delicious.
Just this past weekend, we ventured out again in the woodlands around Port Orford and were rewarded with several perfect matsutakes, Smith's boletes, and an impressive collection of white and golden chanterelles.
We continue to believe that this will be an exceptionally fine mushrooming season in the Pacific Northwest!
