When it comes to restaurant reviews in Oregon, it seems that the Blacksmith Restaurant in Bend, specializing in "New Ranch Cuisine," is always at the top of the "must visit" list. Naturally then, when we found ourselves headed to Bend not too long ago, we simply had to make reservations at this highly rated restaurant and try it for ourselves. Our review of the Blacksmith: elegant, polished, service oriented, busy, noisy, and great food!
Numerous reviews had raved about the Blacksmith's preparation of chicken fried steak (comfort food with a contemporary spin), and we had determined that was going to be our entree for Saturday night, little realizing that the menu had recently changed and it was no longer available. Never fear. Executive Chef Gavin McMichael learned of our disappointment and quickly summoned the kitchen to prepare it for us.
Juniper trees like this one are plentiful
in Central Oregon and are a source of beautiful wood
for artworks and furniture.
We weren't the only delighted diners that night. The local couple at the table next to ours gorged themselves on the lobster corn dogs and raved about the macaroni and cheese drizzled with truffle oil. All eyes were on the smores when they went by our table - house made graham cracker crust, chocolate crisps, peanut butter mousse, and toasted Blacksmith marshmallows.
But the Blacksmith doesn't just serve up food. There's also fun...like the Wednesday after work wine tastings, special events in the Anvil Room, on line recipes (I have got to make the Smoked White Bean Hummus the next time that guests come to our home) and special holiday menus.
In summary, it is fair to say that the Blacksmith Restaurant lives up to its reputation as a fine restaurant that enhances a special occasion - and isn't every occasion special!
